This is a wonderful story to share. It is a reminder of the beautiful attributes of childhood that we often take for granted. I was blessed to read this story and to see the children playing--in the mud, of all places!
I have just been rereading some e-mails and want to share with you about Mud Day in Nepal organized by our Nature Action Collaborative for Children leaders Bishnu Bhatta, Nepal and Gillian McAuliffe, Australia. In short the story goes that at the NACC Leadership Team meeting at World Forum 2009, everyone was talking about playing in the mud. Bishnu stopped everyone cold with the sharing that in Nepal children can’t get dirty because they have only one set of clothes. SO Gillian’s school raised money to send towels and soap and clothes to Nepal so there could be a mud day celebration.
And then Gillian’s school got busy. ”Yep, our children are now busy designing the best mud pit they can imagine. In our environment mud is hard to come by, we have wet sand when we have rain. To make mud we had to locate and bring in some clay soil. Our children now want a permanent mud pit that they can play in every day! For me this project was about remembering that for children joy is an essential element to feed the soul. I think sometimes the adult world forgets this. But the children don’t. Nature can bring joy in such a natural and lasting way. This is the connection the NACC can bring to children all over the world.”
